Who actually calls to the woman who raised them and cared for them “mother?” It is such a formal manner to refer to someone whom you share such an intimate bond. While I have been accused of “returning to the old” because of my views on natural childbirth and breastfeeding, I’m a modern momma and so are my choices.
In the past, the natural choice was the only choice. This is not denigrate the experience of our foremothers, but it is a reality we should accept. I recognize that there have always been means of lessening the pain of childbirth with drugs and substitutes for breastfeeding, but women haven’t always had the dizzying array of options available to us today. And in their time, they didn’t have to answer to the questioning of their own mothers, fellow moms, doctors and nurses. In our day, it is likely that at least one person close to us is at odds (or at least confused) about the choice we make. It is not the manner of the day anymore, so we have blogs and websites and books to explain to others why we make our choices. In the face of a society which does not typically support our choice, we are faced with a very different situation than our grandmothers before us. We have to choose. And the decision isn’t always easy.
I personally had no one who had chosen a natural birth in my life and my own mother had nothing but horror stories about labor. My MIL’s tales were worse. When I began this journey, I was mostly alone: no one with whom I could share my experience. I was the odd man out. (I’ll tell more about my journey some other time.)
Fortunately, I was used to being the odd “woman” out so I gladly accepted my place the natural one. Unintentionally, I became a sort of advocate of natural birth and breastfeeding. I’m still growing into the role, and as I embrace my inner natural momma I find that I’ve also embraced more natural and less formal language and speech. So gone are the days of “mother” and here are the days of “mama, mom, mommy and momma.”
